Who Says We're So Divided?

In Joe’s inaugural speech, he must have said the word ‘unity’ at least a dozen times. Where’d he get it from? He got it from the liberal media which has decided that since they no longer have Trump to kick around, the new narrative will be that we are a totally divided country.

Now maybe we were more divided before and during the Civil War. But clearly things have never been so divided since. I can’t think of a single, liberal pundit or opinion-maker who hasn’t been pushing this theme, particularly since the Capitol riot on January 6th.

By the way, did you notice how many of those disaffected, pissed off Americans showed up to protest the inauguration of Number 46? I love how NBC had nothing better to put on its website than a story about how some idiots claiming to be QAnon followers have ‘lost hope’ now that Trump has disappeared. That’s news?

Here we are, nearly 3 months away from the 2020 election, and I still haven’t seen one, single attempt by any political ‘expert’ to explain how or why Joe and Kamala got 81 million votes. For that matter, nobody seems the slightest bit interested in how or why the national total for the two major candidates in 2020 was 40 percent higher than in 2016.

There has never been an election-to-election increase in total votes which has come even close to what happened last year. And nobody seems to be the slightest bit interested in figuring it out. But after all, if you’re convinced that the only thing the election tells us is how ‘divided’ we are, then why bother to figure out anything else, right?

If we are such a divided nation, if we need to replace unity with disunion, if we need to end what Joe referred to yesterday as the ‘uncivil’ war (which I thought was a clever phrase) then how come when I looked at the people sitting around the about-to-become 46th President yesterday that I saw every member of the Senate and House leadership of the GOP? How come I saw Mike Pence sitting right next to Kamala on the stage? How come even Steve Scalise, the firebrand floor manager for the House GOP, was sitting next to Donna Brazile, who was the head of the DNC not once, but twice?

I’ll tell you why. Because all of this talk about how ‘divided’ we are, how divisive our politics have become, is nothing but talk and it’s simply not true. The only reason that the country appeared to be more ‘divided’ over the last four years was because of the presence and behavior of one, single, solitary individual who is now gone.

Remember back in 2018 when Trump said: “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” He followed this question with a statement about how we needed to encourage immigration from countri3es like Norway, i.e., nice folks who happen to be White.

I have been following politics since 1960 and in those 60 years I never (read: never) heard an American President say something which was so exceedingly vulgar and so incredibly dumb. Not once, not ever.

In his first and only Presidential term, Donald Trump managed to elevate racist rhetoric to a high art form. He never missed an opportunity to remind his listeners that he was a stone-cold racist who was ready and able to cast the most disgusting aspersions on anyone who wasn’t White.

When George Floyd was murdered in full view by a cop who was behaving exactly the way that Trump said cops should always behave when dealing with minorities, it took him five days before he came out and said anything at all. Trump’s uncanny ability to describe every political disagreement in terms of ‘us’ versus ‘them’ became his rhetorical and frequently misspelled messaging on Twitter just about every, single day.

We don’t have a divided country. We had a dope and a racist who sat around on his fat rear end and pretended to be doing something other than watching TV.

I completely disagree with your thesis that we do not have a divided country. A piece of evidence you note is that GOP leadership on the dais along with Dems. They were there because almost everyone followed protocol except Trump who refused to be there. They weren't holding hands and singing Kumbaya together. They are respecting tradition and the institutions they are sworn to uphold. Can you really say we're not divided when you have as many Reps and Senators as we did, who voted to continue the delusional charade of an illegal election? Most, if not all of them know better but they represent folks who believe conspiracy theories, which means apparently they think they have to continue that…
